What Matters Most: Student Postsecondary Success

There is a loud but necessary debate about Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) on a range of issues: test scores and academic content standards, cut-scores and performance standards, teacher qualifications and principal leadership, school assignment and funding, and equity and excellence in our public schools. But this debate often obscures the critically important focus on the ultimate purpose of the 13+ years our children spend in school - to make sure they are fully prepared to engage successfully and productively in an adult world that is ever changing and complex.

Unless we keep the end in mind and are vigilant about monitoring the experiences encountered by our CMS students when they leave our public schools, it will be difficult to determine if the actions and decisions made by adults in their lives have been helpful or harmful. The organization examined available data that provides some insight into the post graduation experiences of about 1/3 of our students who graduate from CMS high schools and subsequently attend one of the 16 colleges or universities that make up North Carolina's Public University System.

The purpose of this report is two-fold: ·

  • To provide insight into whether our Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students are prepared for the rigors of the universities. ·
  • To make the public aware of the vast amount of data that is available from our University of North Carolina system about our CMS students once they leave our schools. Our goal is to make this data part of the strategic planning about ways to improve the effectiveness of our K-12 public education in preparing students for postsecondary education.
